Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver and Rep. Mike Cabell have announced that a state grant of nearly $130,000 has been awarded to make improvements to a playground in Salem Township, Luzerne County. The grant, provided through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program, aims to ensure that the playground meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

"State funding for this playground will help ensure it is an asset for our community, its families, and their children, now and in the future," said Culver. "These state dollars are a significant investment in a project that will benefit residents across the generations. Grandparents, parents, and children, along with other community members, will be able to enjoy this playground."

Salem Township will receive nearly $130,000 for the project, with the municipality being responsible for funding 15% of the total project cost. Cabell, who represents the district, expressed his pleasure in assisting with this endeavor. He stated, "Hopefully, the addition of a wheelchair swing and other improvements will make life a little more enjoyable for children with disabilities and their families."

The funding for this program comes from the 2012 law that established an impact fee on Marcellus Shale natural gas wells. The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA), an independent agency of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, awarded the grant. The CFA was established in 2004 to administer the commonwealth's economic stimulus packages.

This grant will not only enhance the playground in Salem Township but also ensure that it is accessible to all members of the community, including those with disabilities. The support from the state reflects a commitment to creating inclusive and enjoyable spaces for all residents.
